Tribute to David O’Connell from the Staff at OCAE Consultants

It is with a deep sense of gratitude and respect that we reflect on our time working with David. As Managing Director of OCAE Consultants, he was not just a leader, but a mentor and a guiding force who shaped our professional journey and the work culture of the Company.

His vast knowledge of agricultural practices, market trends, and sustainable solutions was matched only by his genuine passion for improving the lives of farmers and advancing the agricultural sector. His ability to see the bigger picture while also paying attention to the smallest details inspired those of us around him to raise our own standards.
What stood out most about David was his unwavering commitment to the team and to bring out the potential in everyone who worked alongside him. He led by example, always treating every Client, Colleague, and Partner with respect, honesty, and fairness. His open-door policy fostered a collaborative environment where every voice was heard, and where learning and growth were encouraged, no matter one’s experience level.

Under his leadership, the Company not only thrived but evolved into a trusted advisory service in the agricultural industry at home and abroad. His strategic vision was coupled with a hands-on approach that made him approachable and invested in the success of the team. He never hesitated to roll up his sleeves alongside us, whether it was brainstorming solutions, problem solving, or simply offering guidance in the busy times – ‘Just Blitz It’ being his favorite motivational line.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, David was a person of great character — kind, thoughtful, and humble. His genuine interest in the well-being of his employees and his constant support made working for him a truly rewarding experience. He had an innate ability to motivate and uplift those around him, and his influence extended far beyond the office walls.

Though we are grateful for the opportunities and lessons we received under his leadership, it is the lasting impact of his example — his professionalism, his compassion, and his integrity — that will remain with us for years to come. We are all better for having had the chance to work with such an exceptional person. His legacy will continue to inspire and guide those of us fortunate enough to have been part of his team.

David may have been the boss, but he was also a role model and a friend, and it has been an honor to work with him.

I wanted to share a few words about the influence David had on my life and career. Almost eight years ago, I began my journey with OCAE as a sampling technician on the Tellus Project. David took a chance on me, giving me the opportunity to step up as an Environmental Consultant, something that I will be forever grateful for. Since that moment, I had the privilege of working closely with him and learning from his unmatched expertise and dedication.
David was never afraid to lead OCAE headfirst into the unknown with new projects, embracing each project as an opportunity for OCAE to grow along with the team. He was always approachable and understanding if you had any questions or faced a problem.
One of my favourite memories with David was when we were soil sampling a farm in the snow. It was a calm day, one that allowed us to appreciate the horses on the farm as they trotted around us, it’s a simple memory that will always stay with me.
David’s mentorship and belief in those around him were truly remarkable. His guidance shaped not only my career but the company as a whole. His legacy lives on in all of us who were fortunate enough to work with him, and his impact will be felt for many years to come. – Joe
